It is common knowledge that the human body is regulated by hormones. These hormones decide our mood as well as our health status. As long as they work properly, we are able behave and emote normally. If they falter in any way, we are prone to illnesses, mood swings and a whole lot of other repercussions! One of these hormones, interestingly also referred to as the ‘love hormone’ is Oxytocin. It is usually heard of with reference to delivery and subsequent lactation in women. However, now there has been significant research into this love hormone and it is unbelievable what all parts of our existence is affected by Oxytocin. It has been noticed that it is this hormone which is the basis of support group cures for cancer, alcoholism and other addictions. Oxytocin is higher in caring parents and also in people with pets helping them to recover faster from various ailments.

Traditionally associated with mammalian female reproduction, Oxytocin is released in the female body by the pituitary gland and is responsible for uterine contractions during labour. Subsequently, it stimulates breastfeeding. It may seem strange but Oxytocin is also produced by males. In fact it is released by both men and women during lovemaking. Studies have been carried out to see what all effects are produced by the secretion of Oxytocin. It has been observed that Oxytocin has a hand in affecting behaviour such as social recognition, inter-personal bonding, trust and anxiety apart from already known maternal behaviour.

The term ‘love hormone’ has many meanings. It refers to the production of Oxytocin during orgasm in both men and women, it also points to the love and bonding of a mother to her new baby. And now with the results of the various studies being made public, we know that Oxytocin also increases generosity, reduces anxiety and creates trust thus aiding healthy inter-personal relationships. It reduces shyness. Since Oxytocin actually mediates emotions especially in close relationships, it may be a boon for those who are scared of meeting new people and forming platonic or sexual liaisons.

f you are one who believes that since Oxytocin has so many social benefits, it is only befitting that this hormone be available in the form of supplements that can be taken as and when the need arises, then you would be happy to know that this is already happening. Usually administered by doctors to women in labour, this drug can now be procured on the internet. It may be noted that too much of anything is not good but Oxytocin, as yet has not been observed to create an addiction or a high! It does not cure one of shyness nor does it make one lose their inhibitions to such an extent that they can be taken advantage of. It merely eases shyness and reduces the anxiety of meeting new people. That is why it is also referred to as the ‘bonding hormone’.
Maybe it’s a good thing that Oxytocin is readily available, we could be heading towards a more tolerant and generous society that believes in bonding with love!

Have you ever felt the sudden rush to hug your loved one? Have you felt the impulse to hold a little baby? Have you ever wanted to pet your furry pal immediately? If so, it’s probably because your Oxytocin levels have just surged to a new high. You might be wondering why the birthing hormone has caused such a rush particularly if you are a guy. Well, contrary to popular belief, Oxytocin is not a female hormone – it is produced by males equally.
In fact the term ‘love hormone’ has emerged because it is this hormone that sees a rise in its levels when two people in love are in close proximity. It creates a turnkey effect causing biological and psychological arousal. The need to bond is also accentuated by this hormone. Gradually, the feelings come full cycle escalating the desires and thereby culminating in passionate love making. In fact, it has been noticed that in a monogamous relationship, after some time, just looking at a partner causes an immense increase in the level of Oxytocin thereby strengthening the bond between the partners. This hormone is released with the touch on the body and increases the want and feeling of intimacy. Unbelievably, it is also responsible for really awesome orgasms particularly when the relationship is monogamous!

Don’t let the term mislead you, the ‘love hormone’ is not an aphrodisiac by itself, but it does produce the need to bond closely. You might experience its effect when you are with a little baby too. You will want to gently hug the infant. That surge of maternal love is also a response due to rise in Oxytocin levels. It has been observed that the levels of this hormone dictate the perception you would have of the person across from you. Scientifically, this would mean that Oxytocin is able to influence the emotional stimuli that the brain receives and so, alter the brain’s response thereby affecting a person’s social behaviour. This hormone is released when hugging or touching another person. This is probably the reason why support group therapy is such a success.
Oxytocin has a whole lot of other positive effects too. It eases shyness and anxiety and is an anti-depressant too. It helps increase trust and reduces the fear people generally have when meeting new persons. This change in social behaviour will help introvert, shy persons to find their soul mates and approach them without the fear. It also reduces cravings thereby helping overcome addictions. It is an effective therapy for all kinds of addictions and chronic disorders. Oxytocin induces generosity and this would probably help make a better society.

The love hormone combines with oestrogen and inspires feelings of such intimacy that it wouldn’t be wrong to refer to the combination as a ‘cuddle hormone’. So, if you are feeling low on libido, it’s just probably your low Oxytocin levels. Luckily, help is at hand and you can increase these levels just enough for your body to get stimulated enough to take over the production of the ‘love hormone’ on its own and give you that ‘top of the world’ feeling of being in love!

As more and more people head towards a corporate life full of social networking, the competition becomes tougher and it becomes essential to be able to perform better than the next person. In the urban jungle too it’s the survival of the fittest. In such a scenario if you are a shy, introvert kind of personality, it is but obvious that you’d be sidelined sooner than later. You may know your job very well but if you can’t network enough, you wouldn’t be able to show your capability. Now imagine that you dress up for a meeting, spray on a secret aroma and suddenly all those you meet listen to you, feel more at ease with you, value your opinion and most importantly, trust you. You are able to close the deals successfully.
Wouldn’t that be great? You have managed to get what you asked for, people trust and believe what you tell them and so you gain a competitive edge over others in your profession. Well, that is exactly what Oxytocin does. It is the secret aroma – the one thing that can ease shyness and anxiety in the wearer and create trustworthiness for him or her. Trust you. Imagine the possibilities for charity and social workers. Now raising funds would be so much easier.

Okay, now picture another scenario. You have a routine married life. You and your spouse both work, come back at the end of the day, cook, eat, clean and go to bed. Nothing exciting as it once was. You start to miss the spark in your love life. If only you could get it back, you’d be so happy. Well, when your spouse gets back from work, just spray him or her with a ‘love potion’ and see the effects! Oxytocin, the love hormone, does exactly this. It facilitates bonding and closeness. Usually the body releases Oxytocin naturally the moment you are touched lovingly. Both men and women have high levels of this hormone during orgasm so it is a natural phenomenon. When life gets hectic, this loving touch is quite often neglected and at such times, Nature can do with a little help! So, spray on that love potion and enjoy marital bliss.
